Therapy Dog - Vancouver

In therapeutic sessions, even the lightest interaction with a dog can interrupt cycles of anxiety or self-criticism. A soft paw, a curious tilt of the head, a warm body nearby—these can be powerful, nonverbal reminders that we are safe, seen, and not alone.

Research in modern psychology consistently shows that therapy dogs can:

  • Lower cortisol and stress levels
  • Regulate the nervous system
  • Increase oxytocin and feelings of safety
  • Encourage openness and emotional expression
  • Offer grounding during vulnerable moments

Roscoe doesn’t judge. He doesn’t need an explanation. He simply is—a calming, affectionate presence that gently invites us out of our heads and into the present moment.

The Buddhist Lens: Mindfulness on Four Legs

In the teachings of Buddhist psychology, one of the most profound practices is that of presence—the radical act of meeting this moment with awareness and kindness. Dogs like Roscoe are natural mindfulness teachers. They don’t carry yesterday’s regrets or tomorrow’s worries. They show up, wholeheartedly to every moment.

His presence encourages:

  • Non-attachment to outcomes
  • Unconditional regard for the self and others
  • The beauty of “just this”—what’s here and now
  • Gentle discipline and loving patience, both in ourselves and in him

Roscoe is still learning. He’ll be entering a formal training program in the fall to deepen his skills as a therapy companion. In the meantime, he’s practicing the art of being—a bit wiggly, a bit clumsy, but fully here. And like all of us on the healing path, his growth is beautifully imperfect.

We kindly ask for your patience and understanding as Roscoe trains on the job. The best way for him to learn is by doing—by showing up in real spaces, alongside real people, and being met with compassion.

A Soft Heart in the Room

We are so excited for you to meet Roscoe—onsite or online—and to experience the subtle but powerful support he brings.
